Delhi Ordinance Bill Sparks Heated Debates In Parliament Amid Data Protection Bill Ruckus

New Delhi, August 3, 2023 - There's a lot of buzz and intense discussions happening at Parliament House in India as the Lok Sabha focuses on the Delhi Ordinance Bill. This bill has caused quite a stir as it aims to replace an existing ordinance that gave the Central government control over Delhi's bureaucrats. The Monsoon Session of Parliament has been filled with passionate debates and opposition from several parties.

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented Delhi Ordinance Bill in Lok Sabha, leading to protests & uproar from opposition MPs. The bill is meant to replace Delhi Services Ordinance, which was quickly put in place by the Centre in May after a significant Supreme Court verdict.

The main issue at the heart of all this is, the power struggle over who controls services in Delhi. The ruling party has majority in Lok Sabha. However, things are different in Rajya Sabha, here opposition parties are determined to stop passing of bill. Key opposition figures like Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Saugata Roy, NK Premachandran, Sushil Kumar Rinku, and Asaduddin Owaisi are expected to present a resolution against the controversial ordinance during the bill's consideration.

The Monsoon Session has seen disruptions and walkouts from the opposition, mainly because of the ongoing Manipur issue. The opposition bloc INDIA has asked for an earlier date for the no-confidence debate to be able to participate effectively in discussions and express their opinions on the legislative agenda.

As all this unfolds, there's another uproar in Parliament over the Data Protection Bill, which was formally presented in the Lok Sabha. Several floor leaders, including Manish Tiwari & others, strongly oppose the bill, citing concerns about individual data privacy & protection.

Parliament's Speaker, Om Birla, has been requested by concerned MPs like Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to resume presiding over the proceedings and maintain the dignity of the Chair. The opposition has also expressed their frustration with how the Manipur situation is being handled, leading them to skip a meeting called by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in the hope of resolving the deadlock.

Government has taken a significant step forward by introducing the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill in Lok Sabha, Amidst these debates. The bill, spearheaded by Telecom and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to give individuals the right to protect their personal data while ensuring it is lawfully processed for various purposes.

The Monsoon Session continues to be a battleground for crucial issues, as political ideologies clash and parties work to find solutions to complex problems. As Indian citizens, we are eagerly watching our elected leaders as they work hard to find common solutions and strike a delicate balance between governing the country and fulfilling the hopes & dreams of people.
