From Army Officer To Billionaire: The Story Of Gurgaon's Richest Man

Indian millionaires like Mukesh Ambani and Shiv Nadar are running multi-billion dollar corporations. Another well-known business figure in the sector is Kushal Pal Singh, a real estate magnate and the richest man in Gurugram. Singh has a net worth of Rs. 1.08 lakh crore, despite having an engineering degree and serving in the Indian Army.

After serving in the Indian Army until 1961, real estate magnate Kushal Pal Singh joined DLF Limited, a company founded by his father-in-law in 1946. Singh later acquired land from farmers and developed DLF City, his flagship township in Gurgaon, a suburb of Delhi.

DLF, India's largest publicly traded real estate company, is headquartered in Delhi and chaired by Singh's son, Rajiv. In 2022, DLF and GIC launched a luxury housing project in Delhi. Singh stepped down as chairman in June 2020 after more than 50 years in the role and now serves as DLF's chairman emeritus.

He was born in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, in 1931. After graduating from Meerut College with a science degree, Singh went to the UK to study aeronautical engineering. He was then selected by the British Officers Services Selection Board to join the Indian Army and was commissioned into the Deccan Horse in 1951.

In 1960, Singh left the army to join DLF Limited, a company founded by his father-in-law in 1946. Singh led DLF's expansion into new markets and developed DLF City, a flagship township in Gurgaon, a suburb of Delhi. Singh stepped down as chairman of DLF in 2020 but remains the company's chairman emeritus.

Kushal Pal Singh (KP Singh), India's biggest real estate tycoon, joined DLF Universal Limited in 1960, shortly after completing his military service. KP Singh was ambitious and had a clear vision for DLF, which he would transform into one of India's largest and most successful companies.

KP Singh, the billionaire real estate developer behind DLF City, has a net worth of nearly $13 billion (about Rs 1.08 lakh crore) according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Singh is credited with building numerous earthquake-resistant homes, offices, shopping malls, and recreational facilities in Gurgaon.
