Massive Seizure Of Raw Sea Cucumber Worth Over Rs 5 Crore In Mandapam

Acting swiftly on received information, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) response team launched a special drive near Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough as they seized around 1,137 kg of banned raw sea cucumber, with an estimated value of Rs 5.11 crore, that had been dumped in the sea. This marks the second major catch made by the ICG near Mandapam within the last two months, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade.

The illegal stash of sea cucumbers was discovered during a comprehensive search conducted by the ICG response team, utilizing trained divers. The smugglers had allegedly dumped approximately 67 gunny bags in the waters near Vedalai Beach, situated south of Mandapam town. The trade and possession of sea cucumbers are prohibited under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972

This recent seizure adds to the growing list of successful operations against the illegal trade of sea cucumbers in the region. Just a few weeks ago, the ICG confiscated around 260 kg of banned sea cucumbers from the Edaiyarvalasai seashore on May 10. It's proof that authorities are actively working to curb this illegal activity that's posing a threat to the marine ecosystems & biodiversity.

In a separate incident, forest personnel in Ramanathapuram district seized 540 kg of sea cucumber at Panaikulam. During the operation, three individuals were arrested, and a van along with three motorcycles were confiscated. The arrested individuals were identified as S Jebamalai (46 years) of Panaikulam, K Muniyasami (31 years) of Vethalai, and Nanthakumar (19 years) of same locality. The forest officials intercepted the van, acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity, and discovered thirty gunny bags containing fresh sea cucumbers.

While these recent seizures represent significant victories in the fight against illegal wildlife trade, efforts are ongoing to apprehend key individuals involved in these operations. Authorities are actively pursuing the arrest of Kuppai alias Seeni Abdul Rahman, a key accused in the case, who is currently absconding. A manhunt is launched to bring him to justice.

In another related incident, law enforcement officials seized 250 kg of processed sea cucumbers in Tiruppalaikudi. Sanjay Gandhi, the offender, was apprehended in connection with the illegal possession of sea cucumbers.

Such operations work as reminders for the ongoing challenges faced in the conservation of marine life, and the need for a continued vigilance to protect these endangered species. The ICG, along with other enforcement agencies, remains committed to combating illegal wildlife trade and preserving our natural resources.
