In response to the growing Nipah virus outbreak, all educational institutions in Kerala's Kozhikode district will be temporarily closed, extending till September 24. The move comes as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of this deadly virus.
This closure mandate encompasses schools, professional colleges, tuition centers, and other educational establishments across the district. The state government made this decision following a recent confirmation of another Nipah virus case, bringing the total count to six. Tragically, two individuals have lost their lives in this latest outbreak.
The current contact list of confirmed Nipah patients comprises 1,080 individuals, with an additional 130 new inclusions reported today. Shockingly, 327 of these individuals are health workers, emphasizing the heightened risk they face.
Not only confined to Kozhikode, this virus has affected people in neighboring districts as well. Among those on the contact list, 29 are from nearby areas, including 22 in Malappuram, three each in Kannur and Thrissur, and one in Wayanad.
Within the high-risk category, 175 are ordinary citizens, and 122 are healthcare professionals. Health Minister Veena George has also indicated that this list is likely to expand as the situation unfolds.
Additionally, the test result of an individual who passed away on August 30 returned positive for Nipah virus on Friday. This development suggests that others might have been infected through this index case.
The state sounded the Nipah virus alert on September 12 after two deaths were reported, accompanied by fever and symptoms of a viral infection. Subsequent tests at the National Institute of Virology in Pune confirmed the presence of the Nipah virus.
In light of these circumstances, authorities are taking significant steps to safeguard the community. Stay informed, stay safe.
