The Mumbai Indians made it three wins in a row after defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 25 of TATA IPL 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Cameron Green was the standout performer with the bat, scoring a maiden IPL fifty (64 off 40), while Ishan Kishan (38 off 31) and Tilak Varma (37 off 17) ably supported him, enabling MI to post a competitive 192/5. In response, SRH was bowled out for 178, giving MI a 14-run victory.
Jason Behrendorff made an excellent start with the ball, removing the in-form Harry Brook (9 off 7) in the second over, who looked in great touch after hitting a couple of fours. Behrendorff continued his impressive spell, dismissing Rahul Tripathi in his next over, and reduced SRH to 25/2. MI's disciplined bowling strategy yielded four fours and a six in the Powerplay, restricting SRH to 42/2 in the first six overs.
Mayank Agarwal and Aiden Markram tried to accelerate the innings by hitting a couple of fours and a six, but Cameron Green shattered SRH's momentum by dismissing Markram (22 off 17) with a catch at deep mid-wicket. Piyush Chawla then scalped Abhishek Sharma in the next over, reducing SRH to 76/4 at the end of 10 overs. Heinrich Klaasen and Mayank Agarwal then forged a partnership, hitting an occasional four every over, before Klaasen (36 off 16) went after Chawla and hit him for 4, 6, 6, 4. Chawla, however, bounced back to have Klaasen caught at long on.
SRH's hopes rested on Agarwal and Abdul Samad, who came in at No.7. However, Meredith bowled an excellent over, sending Agarwal (48 off 41) back to the dugout and giving away just six runs. Jansen hit two fours off Green in the next over, but the latter bowled him out in the next ball, giving away just seven runs in the over.
SRH required 43 runs off 18 balls, with Washington Sundar hitting a couple of fours off Behrendorff, who then conceded five wides. However, a moment of brilliance from Tim David saw him run out Washington. Bhuvneshwar Kumar hit the final ball of the over for a four to make it 19 off it. With 24 runs needed off the last over, Cameron Green conceded just four runs, leaving SRH to chase 20 runs off the last over.
Rohit Sharma, the MI captain, handed the ball to Arjun Tendulkar to bowl the last over. Tendulkar held his nerves and picked up his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing Bhuvneshwar. He conceded just five runs in the over, as SRH was bowled out for 178.
Earlier, SRH won the toss and elected to bowl. MI made two changes to their playing XI, with Rohit Sharma and Jason Behrendorff replacing Duan Jansen and Riley Meredith. Meanwhile, SRH made one change, with Washington Sundar replacing Umran Malik. MI's disciplined bowling and Cameron Green's maiden IPL fifty paved the way for their third consecutive win, keeping them in the top half of the IPL 2023 points table.
